Lesson notes

Lots of good feedback from Yuri tonight:

  • In Elegie, lots of feedback on strums:
    • I need to shorten my thumbnail to enable a different hand pose.  Yuri's thumbnail extends past his fingertip by only 1/16" or so.
    • He's afraid I'm going to scratch my soundboard (again), so was asking me to turn my wrist a bit at the end of the stroke to lift up my thumb.
    • He doesn't want my thumb resting against my index finger, because that reduces its free motion.
    • Finally, I'm putting too much energy into the basses and too little into the trebles, so I need to even that out.
  • In Elegie, there were also several places where I was using AMI fingerings, and he convinced me PIM sounds better.  Also, after a strum, PMI requires less RH shifting, so it's easier to place.
  • Una Limosna:
    • Yuri noticed my thumb tip joint was curved; it's probably just tension I need to release.  The sound gets better when I do.
    • There are a few places (particularly on p. 2) where there are slides where it's possible to keep two fingers down.  In those cases Yuri advocated using only the one finger that will play next.  It makes the slide more relaxed.
